Magical Bus

I passed this VW bus on the way to work the other day.  It kind of glowed in the morning sun- it felt really familiar and gave off a dirtbag climber/surfer vibe that I identify with. I stopped along the road the next morning, camera in hand, and snapped a few frames.  I usually don't do any obvious "trick" photo processing, but it felt right to give this image a faded "60's" look.

So, why did this photo seem so familiar?  Well, I'm a big fan of Stephen Shore, and vernacular American urban landscape style of photography.  I was flipping through a Stephen Shore photo book at Borders and found a photo that I'd seen before, but had forgotten about. I enjoy Shore's take on the ironic contrast of the well-traveled van in the urban landscape.

So, there's the connection explaining why the van seemed so familiar.

  1. Love it. Also enjoying your word smithing. You should publish a coffee table book of your photos and streaming consciousness.....

  3. I find your photo interesting. When I was a kid, my parents had a red VW bus with a canopy. We drove all over Europe. Sometimes we stayed in a campground, sometimes we just pulled over to the side of the road with a coffee can as a porta potty. I find this pic ironic because I too just recently took a pic of a red VW bus (with a canopy of course) in Michigan and sent it to my dad knowing he'd get a kick out of it.

Am enjoying your blog. Keep up the interesting pics and view points.
